JIHADapalooza

Big news from the QuikPro!  Lady luck finally caught up with the best surfer in the world - that's right - Jihad Khodr exploded for 18.26 points.

Jihad's personal story is an inspiration - an against-all-odds, love-will-conquer-all account of an athlete who's overcome poverty and discrimination to rise to the top of the game.  Jihad hasn't exactly gotten a fair shake in the surf media, with self-proclaimed pundits (who are really nothing more than glorified kooks) declaring Jihad to be the worst surfer on tour.  Today Jihad silenced the critics and powered to his best ASP result ever!!!

Here at PostSurf, intolerance is simply not tolerated.  We'd never stoop so low as to judge a surfer by his name or religion.

So congratulations to Jihad!

After his historic heat win, Muslim Surf Fans the world over took to the streets in joyous rallies of celebration.

Even for you, this post is pretty wrong.

  • JSC says:

Good for Jihad - when his parents named him 20 or so years ago, “Jihad” had a different meaning. More like “to strive” or “to struggle” but the word has since been appropriated and applied to a different, far more negative context by Islamists.

Jihad appears frequently in the Qur’an and in common usage as the idiomatic expression “striving in the way of Allah (al-jihad fi sabil Allah)”.

    Nothing wrong with that.

    Go Jihad -boa soarte!

A Brazo claiming a “not dirty-turd” doesn’t surprise me one bit. I saw one claim a paddle out the other day.

  • Jalapenyo says:

I’m amazed. I didn’t expect such a low blow even from you. Definitely way under the belt.
    Sad.

lighten up everyone. this is just a follow-up to yesterday’s more thought-out piece. thoughtful on one hand, totally racist on the other. that’s what they teach at UCSD, isn’t it?

  • coco aine says:

    Now that was refreshing!
No joke it must be tough being born poor and muslim and south american.
It like the zidane of suring,
    Lechi com panchi calenchi wevonchi!

I don’t mean to be disparaging, but I was surprised to see how good his style and surfing was in the R3 heat today. Until now I’ve associated Brazillian surfers with a choppy, beachbreak style, but his turns had style.

Go Jihad (and good luck with your visa application for the Trestles event)!

Jihad is a super nice guy and its fun to see the underdog do well…

I checked twice, it’s officialy time to be freaked out!

Firstly, to say this post is racist or low is just plain retarded. If someone with the first name “poop” equalled their best ever result there would be more than a few puns doing the rounds. There’s no need to be super awesomely politically correct just to insure you don’t incur the same fate as certain Danish cartoonists… And I agree with coco aine, fate definitely dealt Jihad a rough hand re: his appellation(especially given the current political climate), big ups to him for getting this far.

  • daniel reinaldo says:

lady luck, best surfer in the world, very cool.
now make a joke about young blonde north-american prodigies who surf like Curren + Curran + KS + Christian Slater + Christian Fletcher but think the tour sucks because they can’t travel enough to places with awesome waves
it has to be a funny one

  • Beng says:

This is far from racist, quite the opposite in fact. He congratulates a surfer to whom he had previously given little credit. I was impressed as well, though I still think Jihad has pretty rank style

As far as the Muslims celebrating, that’s just funny by virtue of coincidence with the surfer’s name and clearly not racist. Lighten up.
