Sadly, I am not as cool as Alex Knost. Especially when it comes to cutting-edge surf hipster style. Besides being the future of surfing and a totally awesome rock star and a movie star now, Alex is a fashion icon.
From tight jeans to low-cut tops, Alex deftly cross-steps to the tip of androgynous style and balances ever so gracefully there on the precipice.
I can only speculate as to what will be big in 2K9. Only Knost knows.

Lewis, I actually appreciate this post: it’s funny and is less bitter than previous posts about “surfing hipsters”.
But really, while Alex may be an aberration in the surf world, he wouldn’t stick out in any other (relatively cool) subculture that I can think of(especially skating and snowboarding).
My issue is this: when did surfing become so regressive style-wise?
Really, how dare Alex wear anything but boardshorts that go to his ankles, a t-shirt with a silk-screened corporate logo, and sandals that have a bottle opener!
Which happened first: jocks dressing like surfers or surfers dressing like jocks?
And don’t tell me surfers aren’t supposed to care about fasion: is our history not that of Dora, Nuuhiwa, and Lopez?
Kinda have to agree with Blizz — fashion-wise, surfers are the biggest industry-fed sheep-clones in the world. So when a guy like AK comes along and starts trying to do his own thing, it’s pretty sad that all us homophobic surf-jocks gotta make fun of him for trying to have a unique style. Yeah, he does look pretty gay. Yeah, it’s fun to make fun of him. But also, we’re lame, fagophobic, bro-clones for standing in the cool-kids sandbox and pointing and laughing at AK like everyone else. Sometimes I’m so embaressed to find myself dressed like a surfer. We all look like industry stamped clones of each other. I think I just hate all fashion, cool or uncool — maybe I’m having a theraputic breakthrough about what I wear right here on this blog. Golly. Who do I owe for that: LS or AK?

I just wanna know why RVCA didn’t have a full ‘Alex’ page in the recent issue of TWSurf?
The style of a surfer, nor anyone, isn’t supposed to be regressive. Things move forward in general because they work better, are more comfortable, etc. My issue with this kind of style is when people do it for something other than function: “Ohhh I’m so seventies with my shitty old car, 7′6 single fin at 2 foot blackies, short shorts and v-necks”
RIde boards that work best in the right conditions, clothes should be the same way and not just a whack nostalgic turn to an era of which you weren’t even a part. There’s nothing wrong with trying new things, but being weird to be weird is just lame.

Seems most surfers are comfortable in a BONG or RIP CRAP t shirt. Good on him for breaking the surfer/jock mould. I surf but hate the baggy boardshorts and billboard tees, why do you pay to wear that?
