COMMENT of the WEEK

Posted by lewis on April 26, 2009 at 7:54 pm.

What's most interesting to me at this point about Surfline's "new and improved Power Rankings" (as described objectively by Surfline's editor) is that they feature yet another attempt by Surfline to stifle dissent from their audience.

Like all Surfline features, the comments section for the new rankings is moderated.

Unsurprisingly, I received a large number of emails from surfers this week who claimed to have left non-profane, respectful yet critical comments on Surfline, only to see them go unpublished. Instead, Surfline's editors cherry-picked a batch of comments that painted the picture they wanted to tell.  Then they went back and removed some more comments, then they closed the comments section altogether.

free_speech_1

This isn't the first time Surfline has tried to control the commentary surrounding their actions.  Surfline allegedly shut down their message boards after being bombarded with negative comments concerning their actions regarding Barra and Scorpion Bay. More recently they closed comments on both my last installment of the Power Rankings and their new version, once the mood turned sour.

Students of history are well aware that attempts to squash dissent and mute the exercise of free speech usually only encourage more vitriolic responses.

Surfline has learned this the hard way - or perhaps it's more accurate to say they've experienced negative repercussions, without learning at all.  The harder Surfline has tried to snuff out critics, the more discussion has bloomed concerning Surfline on other message boards.

Same thing in regards to the Power Rankings - see the "Hey Surfline! CENSOR THIS!" thread on FantasySurfer or the "Why was my Power Ranking thread removed?" thread on Surfer's forums.

Innocents will of course think that Surfline's moderation amounts to responsible comment management instead of censorship.   It's paranoid to think Sean Collins is actually trying to control what people say and think - right?

Turns out, not so much.

In emails from June 2008, variously sent to Surfline employees, industry insiders, and the editors of Surfer, Surfing, and Transworld, Sean Collins expressed the following thoughts concerning online discussions:

"With the propagation of Web 2.0, blogs, user generated comments, etc. Everyone can post anything they want...While this new information age brings many great things, for sure it's also troubling times as the safeguards aren't yet in place to control those people who may try abuse the system..."

"This is sickening stuff... We learned that from Barra last year but at least you guys have the opportunity to react quickly, and with a "cooperative" non-competitive media in the surf world to get the truth out quickly..."

Well, good luck attempting to "control those people" who have the nerve to excercise their constitutional right to express opinions. You may be able to silence their voices on your own site, or even lobby editors of other magazines in what you see as a "'cooperative' non-competitive media" to remove dangerous opinions from their sites.

But this is PostSurf, and things work differently here.  And the funniest part is, a shitload of people in the industry are reading.

So our comment of the week is simply one of many that Surfline's editors refused to run on their site:

As attempted to be posted on surfline:

“Nice job, fuckwits. This already sucks.

And I like how any negative comments are edited out by the thought police (sorry for the reference you don’t understand). Go Stalin! Go Mao! Go Collins!

Even if you are editing only because of the powers that be, then you have traded your morality for money.

Surfline has sunk even lower. 'Oh, cool! Another ‘Groms Attack’ feature.' Fuck you.”

Surfline resembles North Korea, Iran,… Saudi Arabia..

Do they not know,… Western reason rules.

    It permeates every culture now.

And like the Blob, it oozes under places like every Saudi customs desk,… every P.C. terminal… every business contact…. every flight.

A shame to see Surfline attempting to gum up the gears of a freedom of speech.

  • Blasphemy Rottmouth says:

Thank sweet buheybee Jeebus for my brief Wifi connection. Mr. Lewis, this war is only just beginning. Allow me to elaborate:

Thinking, for lack of a better term, is hard. This is why most Americans vote for the guy they want to have a beer with, as well as why the most popular TV show in the universe is about watching someone else’s fame.

Surfline, along with the majority of current ‘surfing journalists,’ are just another symptom of a cultural blight that refreshes the soul without nourishing it; echoing society without contributing to it. Ed Hardy, trucker hats, energy drinks, LOST, Enzyte - they’re all different peanuts in the same turd that distracts us from solving our own problems and discovering our own discoveries. They are the woof and warp of a continental AIDS quilt of intellectual sloth. The average American may not “like” to be told what to do or think or eat or laugh at, but they are absolutely content to do so. It’s lemming think. You don’t eat at McDonald’s because you like it - you eat it because hundreds of millions of your closest friends have vetted it for you. This is why Dane Cook is a star. This is why Gray’s Anatomy is still on the air. This is why the makers of ShamWOW! are millionaires and the makers of “towel” are not.

Compared to Jim Cramer or Larry the Cable Guy or creationism, Surfline doesn’t even rank as one of the top one hundred oozing lesions of this particular social malady. But ironically, they’ve become an easy target in our small community.

Oh, and they suck mollusk wieners too. (I throw that in there for all the budding insult artists who’ve migrated here by mistake.)

By the way, Objective’s comment of the week was beautiful…

    …you filthy cocksucker!

  • Conspiracy Theorist says:

Hmmmm. No Blasphemy or Lewis Samuels all weekend long. Then Lewis comes on with a strong post Sunday night and within the hour we have 2 Blasphemy posts. Conspiracy? I think not.

  • FBI says:

Don’t worry Conspiracy Theorist, we’re watching this site very carefully. Free speech indeed!

  • Ballz says:

Non-competitive, cooperative media is to truth as a naked photo of rosie o’donnel is to an erection.

  • the larking says:

hey pseudonyms are nothing new, especially with regards to internet publications. i mean come on, not a single person on here is revealing there true identity with their posts, although some are definitely a little less misleading than others. Also, judging by the time gaps in Lewis’ posts and BM’s i’m willing to guess that lewis had just enough time to get in a little fix of liquid courage and really get those creative, spite filled juices flowing (nothing wrong with that of course). You know what, we can make a little SAT prep question out of this, i mean, who doesn’t love analogies anyways. Mick Fanning is to Eugene as Lewis Samuels is to ______?(and no its not his middle name…i hope?)

  • FBI says:

It’s now clear that Blasphemy Rottmouth is a puerile and scatological persona of Lewis Samuels – one of many that Mr Samuels appears to possess. The oral fixation that Blasphemy Rottmouth possesses points to his being an over-protected child and this has manifested itself in his orally sadistic manner and frequent references to things oral, such as ’suck mollusk wieners’ and ‘you filthy cocksucker!’ as well as lewd offers to fellate other posters on this board. Our psychiatrists here tell us that he’s probably getting off on this right now. What a sick fuck.
This dissociative identity disorder that Mr Samuels appears to be tormented with is often the result of severe sexual, physical, or psychological trauma suffered as a child. This could quite possibly be the result of him being an over-protected child who was abused by a caregiver, perhaps a nurse, a nanny or an uncle with a penchant for something that I’m loathed to bring up here.
We advise to not approach Mr Samuels or engage with anyone calling themselves ‘Blasphemy Rottmouth’. Mr Samuels’ firing from Surfline is probably the cause of the acceleration of his dissociative identity disorder. We consider him unemployed and dangerous. The fact that he painted ‘Blasphemy Rottmouth’ as being a successful family man confirms this. Once again, do not approach or engage.

I actually dislike you as a person Lewis. You are a snake in the lineup at O.B. and constant name-dropper. That said, your power ratings were the finest piece of literature on surfline. I posted a comment that was posted and then subsequently removed on the surfline thread. Its a shame and I’m so glad you have brought the PR back on this site. I might even overlook the next time you paddle inside by buddy, who surfs better than you, on the best left tube of the day, and drop in like you didn’t see him.

  • ted says:

There is something funny going on here. It smells like roadkill spayed with perfume. Surfing as a sport may be eternal, but surfing as a culture is long dead, we are only just now figuring it out. We only have ourselves to blame, as we are still caught up in a freeriding, children of the earth mythology that was never true to begin with. Surfers are easy targets for marketing because they consider themselves different from the average joe. We’re free spirits, maaaaan. Counter-culturalists, outsiders, misfits, rebels. It doesn’t take a marketing genius to figure our how to package and sell our sport. There aren’t any shady powers that be who somehow hijacked out past time, surfers are just arrogant, gullible sons of bitches. The really funny thing is how the surf industry can basically do whatever it wants while we gobble it up hook line and sinker. “Let’s have a bunch of corporate sponsored contests and create professionals who make six figures and appear in a bunch of magazines. THEN, let’s create “soul surfers” who make the same amount of money but pretend like they are actually AGAINST that whole scene so we can sell rainbow colored boardshorts and hemp sandals to all the “anti-competition” people”. Magazines (online or print) get most of their revenue from add space so of course they are in in on the hustle.
The only really surprising part in all of this is that surf culture has devolved into such self parody without anyone makine much of a fuss. Perhaps it is against the nature of true surfers to raise or answer a call to arms. They are too chilled out — after all: who cares what some silly magazines say, maaaaaaan?
Mr. Rottmouth has a point that all culture seems to be descending into ever-more-mediocre depths. But even among that sad panorama of decay, surfing stands out as particularly lame. Reality tv is bad, but you can still catch planet earth on PBS. Fox and MSNBC lie, but you can pick up some newspapers and still find truth (not always, but it’s there if you look hard enough). Where can we go for the truth about surfing? More importantly, do we really want to see it?

  • Ballz says:

Mr. Collins learned from Barra. You quelch speech the moment you don’t approve. With an accomodating media, the truth never gets out.

We also need to learn from Barra. Lewis, perhaps now is the time to write an honest piece on the mess left by Rip Curl there. If you need funds to investigate, let’s start a collection. Hell, let’s start a foundation.

B-Rot, or Assphlegmy, as I affectionately refer you, thank you for the compliment regarding my comment of the week. I appreciate it, especially since the other commentators on this site celebrate you as much as they do L.S.

Funny, though, that I am the same person who engaged you in some very enjoyable repartee a while back; repartee that earned you your own ‘comment of the week’. Remember?

Anyway, a few days ago I decided to eliminate use of all monikers, which I used to enjoy creating almost as much as the comment itself. So, nice to officially introduce myself to you and the rest.

B-rot, thanks again, and good to have you back. I can almost guarantee I will occasionally shit talk your spewings, but its all in good fun.

  • The Nug says:

If Surfline has Lewis Samuels assassinated I hope they film it on super 8 and run it live on a premium feed from the Huntington Cam. Back and to the left…back and to the left. I figure that would be the only way I would pay money to become a member.

  • Pobby Brown says:

    Mr. Samuels,

Was Surfline your first paying gig as a journalist? So much for that reference, eh?

  • Mike says:

La Jolla was a secret worth keeping, and was for many years. RIP. Mexico was a playground and I had so many empty treasures. It will return once the pandemic quarentines the country, but I’m not sure if surfing in a Hasmat suit is functional. I guess I could slap some stickers on it…..

The gentrification of disinformation regarding a formerly independent pursuit is another example of the sterilization of any rebellious thought that doesn’t value money first. Surflie is a carefully guarded product. It bores us with sterile “pro’s and groms, preaching to their choir. Individual thought is the enemy of brand indoctrination.

  • Christopher Monckton says:

Free speech in America? Does it exist? Then why did congress flipflop and not allow me to testify alongside Al Gore at the climate change hearings on Friday?

And why hasn’t Al Gore agreed to ONE SINGLE DEBATE on climate change with a scientist who has a different opinion? And why doesn’t the media ever mention all of the FINANCIAL INTEREST Al Gore has in Cap and Trade legislation being passed?

Free speech my ass. This government is more crooked than Mickey Dora’s credit card statements back in the day.

  • Ballz says:

The issue isn’t simply the exposure of La Jolla, but promises made to the community which weren’t delivered.

    P.S. Palin ‘12 bitches!

    P.S.S. I did it again didn’t I? Fuck me.

  • schadenfreude says:

There was no censorship of the Barra Event by Surfline- Barra, the spot was broken wide-open by Rip Curl who held the Search there and promised the town 50k, but never paid them anything cause they were “over-budget”. The 50k was going to be used for a medical clinic and to finish the road. A group of surfers arranged a fundraiser two years ago to raise the money for the town as a goodwill gesture. Sean was one of those people and was instrumental in getting it done. “The incident” occured when some australians who were visiting Barra refused to get out of the water (imagine not getting out of water at pipeline prior to a contest- you get a beating). The locals removed them from the water. The australians went to the internet and blasted a bunch of shit against Collins and all the sponsors claiming all sorts of stuff that was factually untrue. Some publications printed these allegations without fact checking. It all snowballed but Sean Collins and Surfline did not try to supress anything. If you talk to people who were actually there including Mike parsons and the founder of Surfaid the facts are clear. While I have my issues with Surfline and Collins- the real people that suffered were the people of Barra. They got their medical center and road but the amount of negative media coverage caused the event never to be held again.

  • schadenfreude says:

In terms of supressing comments on their website it is a bullshit thing to do- period.

    P.S. Fuck me!

  • stu says:

What I like about this post isn’t the fact that surfline edited posts, which was predictable, but that Lewis has insider emails he’s willing to spill. I was worried Lewis’ insight would lessen as his ties were cut, but it looks like he can just move in a more interesting direction.

  • Black's Slacks says:

Isn’t it nice to know that your comment will be published? Doesn’t it suck to read the new and “improved” Power Wankings? Improved like what? Three times the writers, one-third as interesting.

Sure, our boy LS has got some flaws, that’s one reason his shit is interesting. Surfline is absolutely blowing it, handling this thing the way they are. We always knew they were a corporate machine, but now we’re pissed off and wanting to find alternatives. Why not make Postsurf the one? At least LS has the sack to speak his mind and take his punishment like a man.

  • stu says:

Unfortunately, a large majority of Surfline readers are tools who won’t care, or even notice, that LS is gone. They like the 15 second ads for the same Rip Curl shorts each time they want to look at pictures of Rip Curl groms ripping it up on a Rip Curl photo shoot.

  • Blasphemy Rottmouth says:

I was once a non-believer in Lewis’ Power Rankings. An infidel, if you will. My miniscule mind simply could not comprehend the possibility of a power that exceeded the limits of rational consciousness. But alas, dear brothers and sisters, those foolish thoughts were vanquished the night Lewis Samuels made a personal visit to my bedroom.

The non-disclosure agreement Lewis made me sign renders most of the details from that night moot. But, I have been mercifully allowed to say that it involved bacon grease, a rack of lamb and a lamp. You all may never know all the details, but rest assured, at one point the room was awash in an eerie warm red flesh-glow and the aroma of burnt 60 watt butthole. When all was said and done, I had asked Him into my heart and he had washed me free of all doubt.

If you have not been visited by Mr. Samuels, do not despair. Times will surely change. For He visits every man, woman and child at least once during their lifetime. And rest assured; your conversion will be easy and… mostly painless.

Whatever you do, just respect and do not deny the lamp.

  • Blasphemy Rottmouth says:

    ^^That was for Nealdude.

    I hope that helps.

  • Beng says:

I didn’t leave a comment on surfline’s feature so I have no romanticized story of being deleted, but I thought the new Rankings were well done overall. They should have only Matt Griggs comment and not the other guys though. Cairns is ok, just more vanilla. Griggs is insightful in a way that is unseen in pro surfing. Too bad they couldn’t have kept LS and had him team with Griggsy to shit on everyone who is in poo-stance, Wade Bogg-ing, or using the pull out method in heats.

  • Blasphemy Rottmouth says:

Let’s be fair. Allowing our unrestricted and transcendent commentary on Surfline’s mortal ‘Power Rankings’ debacle would be like pushing into an orphanage dining area, a stainless steel buffet station with various dry breakfast cereals arrayed in chronological order - except at the bottom of one of the cereal bins, sleeps a rabid wombat on a bed of mashed mule nostrils; who will awaken, fevered and hungry for the children’s eye flesh.

Surfline doesn’t want to do that.

For the sake of their children.

  • Not a Blasphemy Fan says:

I hope Lewis is actually not Blasphemy Rottmouth. BR’s vaguely connected absurdities and vulgarities begin to lose their shock-value after a certain number of posts. After that, they’re just boring. What did he say in that last post? Nothing that hasn’t been said already. I have high hopes for Lewis, but a piss poor hack-job of Hunter Thompson is not what I have in mind.

  • Bob Dobb says:

Speaking of Ripped and Curled. Lets have a little contest right here.

Name the day, month, and year Rip Curls new shop in HB shuts down.

The manner in which the manager of that location is stressing, the old boy is almost as less friendly and uptight as the surfless Palestinian dudes who own and run Jacks freaking Surfboards.

    My guess?

  • marx´s throbbing liver says:

@marx´s corpse: your body is dead but your liver and ideas live on. on friday i´ll look for that beach under the pavement in your honour..and thrash some cops with the proceedings. the surf media is indeed a good example for a spectacle in the sense of debord. just a lot of hot air to hype products nobody really needs, but that hype permeates everything in the surfing world. i live in a place 250 miles from the next surfable windslop and 1500 miles from the closest stand-up barrel yet lots of people dress in billabong boardies and quik hoodies.
@mike: you´re wrong. as i mentioned elsewhere, the media every once in a while needs a conformist rebel for marketing advantage and credibilty. LS played that role pretty well at surfline, ridiculing euros and brazzos and getting sucked up into the media frenzy, namedropping and getting close to the big players. but then LS broke the unwritten laws in media: 1. NEVER critize the advertizers or your superiors 2. NEVER admit that the media is basically nothing more than an advertisement campaign (transworld article) 3. ALWAYS let your editors see EVERYTHING you write before you publish it.
i hope LS stays out of the media. i like whats happening here. it´s got a tiny bit of that bubbly taste of subversion..
@ ted: when was surfing not marketed? when surfers still shaped their own boards from redwood logs? surfing is a highly marketable commodity but in the end it is just a commodity like a drain cleaner. it´s just a lot of fun doing it when few other idiots are around.

  • B9K9 says:

I left a very moderate comment at SL suggesting that there are key differences in marketing & selling surf content vs surf wear.

Basically, in order to produce compelling content, authors (such as LS) need to have significant personality disorders. If properly channeled, these issues can manifest themselves in producing entertaining insights. OTOH, selling surf wear in the Midwest takes patience and an objective geared towards personal remuneration, regardless of cost - soul or otherwise.

Of course, not only was it not published, but the other initial comments that drew similar conclusions were removed as well. By the time they locked the section, the entire piece represented a masterful PR effort geared towards sanctioning the most boring piece of writing I have ever seen in any major publication.

LS: Content is king, buddy. I contacted you a long time ago about leveraging both your talent & the wide range of low-cost publication tools to enable you to outproduce the hell out of the drones. Surf forecasting has become a commodity business - you could team up with any of the redundant forecasters to create a decent prediction/condition site wrapped up in snarky POV.

Here’s an example: Friday was really big at Lowers - easy DOH on the sets. There was a shitload of pros from all over. There has got to be great gossip & scoops from these sources - as long as they are protected.

Think big. You’re the one that’s hard to replace.

@BobDobb - re: RipCurl HB. After hitting Forever21 yesterday, my wife went into RC looking for some sandals for our son. Came right out and headed towards Jacks (she says they have more selection than HSS).

Say what you will about Jack’s, but at least they’ve been there forever. The dad (or was it great-grandfather?) converted their original drugstore (the old brick building) eons ago to cater to the surfer trade back in the late 50s.

I was hassling the current managing son a few months back about how Target, Walmart, et al are running down their inventory levels. He replied that you need full shelves to sell product. I said yeah, but don’t get stuck with stale merchandise. The big box stores have ex-US Army logistics experts working for them to manage their stock; if they’re being cautious, look out.

It seems like the staff at SURFLINE came out in droves to bash LS. I would be extremely surprised if a lot of the anti-Samuels comments weren’t an attempt to rejuvenate opinions about SURFLINE and their crap attempt at a new power rankings. The safe writing from the three “experts” doesn’t bother me, it’s the fact that they are trying to make it seem like they’re better off with out Samuels.

  • ShakaZulu says:

Look, I love Power Rankings 1.0, but it’s naive and laughable to hold Surfline to New York-times like journalistic standards. Why jeopardize a sweet part-time gig to rail against a puff piece about a Billabong junket? You know what you lost, but what have you won?

  • Dudley Poor says:

    ShakaZulu:

Surfline pays photographs nothing for their first contributions, and after being harrassed they pay $30 for additional stories. What Samuel lost probably amounted to about $1000 dollars a year from those fucking leeches. It’s the surf industry BRO - we don’t have to pay you dick cause it’s sooooo coool to work for a surf company!!!

Luckily some people don’t make decisions based on protecting their ass by kissing the bosses ass.

  • PeterPerfect says:

    Sweet Jesus.

Lewis might not hit the mark all the time at least he’s trying to do something different. You, Sir, are a hack of the worst kind. Why? Because your writing is boring.

    Dear Pepe,

I don’t know who this Blasphemy Rottmouth is but mom said that as soon as the neighbor and her finish decorating her bedroom she will have enough money to take me shopping. They’ve been in there for a long time so maybe she will have enough to get me a new board too. What do you recommend, Channel Islands, Rusty, or Lost? I saw a sick new video with Wardo so I think I want a Lost.

Wow, looks like someone bought surflines story on the barra good will event. Yes I’m sure the $20k surfline paid the village was very useful to them but in closing the spot to all other surfers (for 5 days during one of the best swells of the season) so Mike Parsons and friends could score some uncrowded waves they are setting up a culture where its ok for people with enough money to buy access to surfbreaks. Soon all of central america will be closed to all but the highest bidder, its already happening in el salvador when surfers who stay in the community and bus to the breaks are being turned away by armed guards paid for by the american surf camps.
