Comment of the Week.

Comment of the Week goes to Ballz, who was savvy enough to spot talent when it bugged out in front of him.  Specifically, Ballz recognized the real star of the show from last week on PostSurf: this dude.

Ballz says: May 12, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Did you guys see Jessie from Dukes of Hazard talking about [...]

PHOTO DISPATCH: REPO OUT WEST

Enough with the fuckin' words. Really, people! The world tour's rigged, it's not rigged, I'm over surfing, I'm stoked again, Jesse Ventura is a kook, Jesse Ventura is a hero, blah blah BLAH.
We've probably written the equivalent of 5000 tweets this week on PostSurf.  We're scaring the children - they think in single sentences.  Verbosity [...]

MYSTERIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Remember that story last year about a Kaua'i mortgage lender who stole $1 million from Bruce and Andy Irons?
As reported in the Honolulu Adverstiser, James W. Lull was charged with defrauding investors in a Bernie Madoff-styled Ponzi scheme, eventually declaring bankruptcy and owing his victims $50 million.
At the time, many surfers expressed something along the [...]

The SEARCH for MEANING

There was a scary, sloshed moment sometime late last night when I became convinced that Jesse "The Body" Ventura is more of a surfer than I am.
How has it come to this?
Surfing used to be everything to me - a calling and act beyond reproach.  Instant meaning, instant happiness.  Each new day a revelation.
Now all [...]

CONFLICTS of INTEREST

Watching the Billabong Pro Tahiti webcast brings to mind some obvious surf industry conflicts of interest.  Other sport leagues believe that conflicts of interest delegitimize professional sport.  Therefore, they go to lengths to avoid them.  But the ASP?
Bitch, pleeeeease!
Let's consider three examples:

1) Wildcards: Think about this one for a second.  How fuckin' absurd is it [...]

ECHO BEACH: Revisionist History

As Winston Churchill reportedly said, "History is written by the victors."
Such is the case with Echo Beach, a seemingly self-congratulatory documentary in which a group of ex-pro surfers, turned surf industry insiders, give themselves a pat on the back for being tremendously cool and good-looking rippers back in the 80s.

Surfermag just ran an article by [...]

Who is JOB?

What does it mean to be a professional surfer in 2009?  Unless you're in the Top 16, being a success comes down to media coverage.  Way back in the 20th Century, media coverage meant surf magazines and films.
Of course, the internet has changed all that... although it's taking the surf industry a while to figure [...]

Comment of the Week: ‘Death to Surfers’ Update

Earlier this week I wrote about an SF Chron article in which localism was presented as a breaking news story... for, like, the 1,784th time.
The best part of the article? The comments it elicited from readers - many of whom were non-surfers, shocked and outraged by the behavior of surfers.

Comment of the week goes to [...]

Photo Dispatch: Reposar

Dave Rastovich doesn't speak on Tuesdays.  On Saturdays I'm often hungover or drunk or incapable of original thought. So let's focus on images instead of words.
Shooter Jason Reposar generously sent in these images of Nusa Tengarra for PostSurf use.
Check the sequence of Rob Machado: a top-shelf moment from a broken utopia.
Rob seems to be going [...]

Get out the VOTE!

The great politician Gandalf once said, "With great power comes great responsibility."  That's how I feel about the right to vote.  As an American, I take the right to vote very, very seriously.  I believe it's our civic duty to research and consider all candidates, and then cast our vote for the person we believe [...]

Oh SNAP! The mainstream is clowning us!

Today the San Francisco Chronicle put up an article about localism: "Surfing - a feeling of freedom many won't share."
As C.W. Nevius, a non-surfer, sees it:
"A mini-boom has hit surfing. Midlife-crisis guys, trendy twentysomethings and athletic women looking for a challenge are standing on the beach, watching the breakers and thinking they might like to [...]

Should I Get a Mini-Me?

This is an aspirational post.
I don't think my personal brand is quite strong enough yet, but in the future I hope to have a Mini-Me.
Yesterday in the comments, Peter Perfect linked to this awesome clothing company, Cosmic Love, that Donovan Frankenreiter's wife started.  They make zany retro $82 bell bottoms for peace-lovin' tykes, age 2-7!
Check [...]

Don’t Blame the Brands

Here’s the conspiracy theory:  American surf media produces banal catalogs because of the brands.  Those greedy bastards only care about selling more threads to the masses, which means surfing must be packaged in a sunny, positive, healthy wrapper for the conservative hoards.  The brands control the media, because without the advertising dollars of the major [...]

POSTSURF FAQs

One of the very few upsides of running this little corner of internet fuckery known as “PostSurf.com” is that I’ve been granted magical powers by Google Analytics that allow me to see how you all got here.
Whenever I’m feeling pessimistic about the intelligence level of surfers, I just browse the search terms that got them [...]
